In stock

  • MacDonald’s second, & most famous, fantasy book for children
  • New edition [Blackie & Son, 1911]; 308pp; dark green boards, inlaid gold pattern & titling, colour illustration pasted to front [damaged, with slight loss at bottom rhs corner], top edge gilt, rough-cut edge, illustrated endpapers, 1cm split to front board base, front inner hinge with split starting, slightly canted, extremities a little rubbed & bumped; a very good copy
  • With 12 full page colour illustrations [+ that on front board] & 30 b&w in-text illustrations
  • Illustrations uncredited but b&w appear to be from original Arthur Hughes illustrations in the first edition [Strahan & Co, 1872] and colour by Helen Stratton [all initialled HS & Stratton was named in later Blackie publications of MacDonald books]
  • Gift inscription on half-title dated Xmas 1914To David Stirling Reissmann* from his namesake” and signed by prominent South Australian surgeon & politician, Sir Edward Charles Stirling [1848-1919]

*Reissmann was four years old when gifted this book, prior to WWI. Due to anti-German sentiment, his father later changed the family name to Riceman and David [presumably] has attempted to rewrite his name in the inscription, hence it appears a little messy!
