(2) The Health and Social Impact Of The Ash Wednesday Bushfires: A Survey Of The Twelve Months Following The Bushfires Of February 1983 

In October, 1983, in response to a request from professor Raphael, the Chairman of the South Australian Health Commission gave approval for a study to evaluate the effectiveness of support services provided to bushfire victims and which should assess the effects of bushfire experience and its aftermath on health. A similar evaluative study was later initiated in the Health Commission of Victoria. It was intended that the two studies should result in valuable comparable data on health outcomes of fire affected communities becoming available to the States and the Commonwealth. Unfortunately, the Victorian study could not be carried through. This study thus provides the first systematic information of this kind and establishes a basis of understanding of service provision and preventive measures in this area.
